I have set out to incorporate periods of what I call strategic indolence into my routine.

0:48

That is, scheduled times where I step back from the work.

0:52

This is not laziness, it is the furrow in a farmer's field lying fallow to replenish itself for a richer harvest.

0:59

Now, this sounds contrary to the never take your foot off the gas philosophy, but let me dissect it.

1:06

Imagine you're solving a complex problem.

1:09

You could bang your head against it for days or step back and engage in a different activity

1:11

giving your subconscious the reins.

1:16

Often, it's while walking in nature or in the stillness of an early morning that the solution materializes.

1:22

You won't find many endorsing this.

1:25

The culture of immediate gratification and visible busyness is too pervasive.

1:29

But think about it.

1:31

How many people do you know who are busy all the time, but never seem to move forward?

1:35

There's a veil between motion and progress.

1:37

Living it requires courage and breaking from the pack.

1:41

To incorporate strategic indolence successfully, here's my proposal.

1:45

First, establish clear goals.

1:48

Know your destination.

1:50

Second, plan your work with intense, focused periods followed by set times for rest.

1:56

It's akin to high-intensity interval training in the gym, but for your brain.

2:00

And finally, trust the process.

2:03

Allow your mind the freedom to wander.

2:06

For often, it knows the way better than your conscious efforts do.

2:09

Billions didn't land in my lap overnight, nor was it by chance.

2:13

The path was paved with deliberate decisions, including when to act vigorously and when to be purposefully passive.

2:20

Employing strategic indolence has the paradoxical effect of accelerating your journey, not hindering it.

2:26

As we wrap up today's episode, reflect on how you might apply strategic indolence in your life.

2:32

It might just be the thing you need to leap ahead and not just run faster on the same place.
